Ireland’s Nicola Tuthill became her country’s first ever medallist in European Throwing Cup history when she picked up U23 silver in Leiria 2023 and she made more history by becoming Ireland’s first ever champion at the 2025 European Throwing Cup in Nicosia on Sunday (16).
After winning silver in the U23 hammer in 2023 as well as 2024, Tuthill finally landed gold in Nicosia with a European U23 leading mark of 69.74m, just shy of her lifetime best of 70.32m.
Tuthill reached 69.70m on her second attempt which came under some threat from last year’s winner Thea Löfman from Sweden who landed the hammer at 69.06m on her third attempt.
However, Löfman was visibly struggling with a back injury and only took one further throw - a foul - while Tuthill improved ever so slightly to 69.74m with her fifth attempt. She was a model of consistency all the way through the competition with six valid throws, all of which were in excess of 67 metres.
There was disappointment for the host nation as European U18 and U20 champion Valentina Savva - one of Cyprus’ main hopes of the medal at this event - pulled out of the competition.
Third successive U23 discus title for Richter
Steven Richter made it a hat-trick of titles in the U23 discus to win Germany’s third gold medal of the weekend.
Richter had already won the competition courtesy of a second round attempt of 60.46m but he added further lustre to his morning’s work by improving to 60.72m with the final throw of the competition.
Spain’s Marcos Moreno finished second with 58.56m while 18-year-old Jarno van Daalen from the Netherlands picked up his second medal of the weekend with bronze in 57.79m to accompany his silver medal from yesterday’s U23 shot put.
In other U23 events, there was another German victory with Nick Thumm winning the javelin with a lifetime best of 77.09m while Türkiye’s former European U20 champion Pinar Akyol won the women’s shot put with 16.15m.
The next major milestone for many of the medal winners will be the European Athletics U23 Championships in Bergen, Norway from 17-20 July.
