Ukraine’s Iryna Gerashchenko took the honours at the Beskyd Bar high jump meeting in Trinec, Czech Republic, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Silver event on Tuesday (7).

Gerashchenko had a best of 1.90m  in front of a sizeable and supportive crowd at the Werk Arena.

The 2021 European indoor silver medallist lived up to her billing as event favourite but couldn’t quite hit the heights she did in Hustopece, Czech Republic on Saturday where she cleared 1.97m to take victory.

She soared clear on her first attempts at 1.80m, 1.84m and 1.87m before moving to 1.90m where she had just two rivals left for company:

Yuliya Chumachenko of Ukraine and Montenegro's Marija Vukovic had also both cleared 1.87m at the first attempt and while Gerashchenko knocked the bar on her first try at 1.90m she adjusted and soared clear on the second attempt, which handed her victory after both Chumachenko and Vukovic failed three times and shared second place.

"Thanks a lot for your support," Gerashchenko told the crowd afterwards. "I’m a little tired after a few competitions but 1.90m is good for me, 1.95m is better but maybe next time. I think I will be back next year."

In the men’s event, Cuba's Enrique Zayas looked the most likely winner throughout, recording a perfect series up to 2.26m which he cleared at the first attempt. This proved enough to seal victory for the former world U20 champion, who went on to record three failures at 2.28m.

There were also U20 competitions at the same meeting, with Czech athletes Katerina Pribylova taking the women’s event with 1.65m and Jan Vojtek winning the men’s with a best of 1.92m..
