  • Weekend roundup | Vloon clears early season world lead of 5.82m

Menno Vloon from the Netherlands opened his season in good form with victory at the Univers Perche in Devoluy, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Challenger event, on Saturday (11) evening.

Vloon cleared an early season world leading mark of 5.82m for victory over French pole vaulters Thibaut Collet (5.70m) and Baptiste Thiery (5.61m) on the road to the Apeldoorn 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships from 6-9 March.

Vloon, who holds the Dutch record with a 5.96m clearance, is yet to win a major medal in his lengthy international career but the 30-year-old will have an excellent chance of making the podium in Apeldoorn with world record-holder Armand Duplantis from Sweden unlikely to compete.

Reigning European U23 champion Marie-Julie Bonnin cleared 4.51m to win the women’s pole vault.

Reigning European outdoor champion Angelica Moser from Switzerland also cleared 4.56m for victory at home at the Stabhochsprung Stars in Frauenfeld, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Challenger event, on Sunday.

Italy’s Olympic pole vault sixth-placer Elisa Molinarolo also cleared 4.60m on home soil in Padua on Sunday.

Big 1500m lifetime best for Garcia in Sabadell

Former European 800m champion Mariano Garcia clocked an outright lifetime best in the 1500m at the Miting Catalunya, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Challenger event, in Sabadell on Friday (10) evening.

Garcia clocked a fast 3:35.87 for victory over former European indoor 3000m champion and frequent racer Adel Mechaal (3:36.75) while world U20 bronze medallist Alex Pintado set a Spanish U20 1500m record of 3:40.46 in fifth.

Other notable results included Elvin Josue Canales winning the men’s 800m in 1:45.83, Marta Mitjans winning the women’s 800m in a Spanish U20 record of 2:03.68.

Elsewhere around Europe…

Two-time European U20 cross country champion Innes FitzGerald from Great Britain clocked a fast 8:48.30 in a mixed 3000m in Cardiff on Sunday.

While this time won’t be ratified for record purposes, FitzGerald’s time was not only faster than Zola Budd’s long-standing British indoor U20 3000m record of 8:56.13 but also Sofia Thøgersen’s European indoor U20 record of 8:50.26.

Another outstanding talent Kelly Douala from Italy, who will be eligible for this year’s European Athletics U20 Championships in Tampere, ran 7.27 in the 60m in Bergamo on Sunday. The 15-year-old broke both the Italian U18 and U20 records.

In Jamor, Portugal on Saturday (11), Portugal’s Gerson Balde jumped an impressive 8.11m in the long jump.

Türkiye’s Omer Faruk Bozdag also set a national indoor 800m record of 1:47.01 in Istanbul on Saturday.
