Reigning world heptathlon champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson is the star name on the field for the pentathlon on 28 January. However, the Brit - who is one of only five athletes to have broken the 5000 point-barrier in the pentathlon - might not contest all five disciplines in Aubiere.
Other standout names on the pentathlon entry-list include Austria’s Verena Mayr - who won bronze behind Johnson-Thompson when she won her first world heptathlon title in 2019 - and Spain’s Maria Vicente who returns to combined events action having focused on the horizontal jumps in 2023.
The heptathlon field includes no fewer than 11 athletes with lifetime bests in excess of the 6000 points-barrier including Switzerland’s European decathlon silver medallist Simon Ehammer who will be looking for his third successive victory at this meeting.
Ehammer’s main rivals include his long-time contemporary and Olympic decathlon bronze medallist Ashley Moloney from Australia and Spain’s four-time European indoor heptathlon medallist Jorge Urena. The French challenge is led by Makenson Gletty and Ruben Gado.

Many of France’s leading athletes are due to compete in Nantes including 2021 European indoor champion Wilhem Belocian in the 60m hurdles, world U20 champion Erwan Konate in the long jump and European U23 4x400m champion Louise Maraval in the 400m.

World 5000m silver medallist Mohamed Katir from Spain also lines up in the mile against a field featuring France’s European indoor 1500m bronze medallist Azzedine Habz and Sweden’s European U20 3000m champion Jonathan Grahn.

What happened last weekend?
At the Sparkassen Indoor Meeting Dortmund on Saturday (20), 19-year-old Laura Raquel Müller made a big leap forward - both literally and metaphorically - by setting a lifetime best of 6.81m to win the long jump against a field which included reigning Olympic champion and teammate Malaika Mihambo.
There was delight for Luxembourg’s top athletes on home soil at the CMCM Indoor Meeting on Sunday (21). Bob Bertemes won the shot put with a world leading 21.71m and Patrizia Van Der Weken closed the programme with victory in the 60m with a national record and world lead of 7.09.
European U20 100/200m champion Marek Zakrzewski from Poland also finished second overall in the 200m, winning his 200m heat in a European indoor U20 record of 20.80.
