Türkiye's Emel Derili and Hungary's Robert Szikszai will this weekend have a chance to rubber-stamp their success from last summer - as their rivals for gold in 2013 take on the challenge of beating them this time.

The European Cup Winter Throwing in Leiria on Saturday and Sunday is the perfect opportunity for the continent's leading field eventers to compete outdoors during the winter.

The two days comprise of javelin, shot put, discus and hammer events for both men and women at senior and under-23 level.

And it is the younger age group where Dereli and Szikszai will attempt to come into their own again.

They left Rieti last summer with gold packed among their luggage after outstanding, record-breaking performances at the European Athletics Junior Championships.

Dereli won the shot put with 18.04m - a national record - and Szikszai triumphed in the discus with 64.75m, a national junior record.

Szikszai will meet the man who finished second to him in Rieti, Great Britain's Nick Percy, who ended with 62.04m while Dereli will be up against the two women who shared the podium with her - Britain's Sophie McKinna, who won silver with 17.09m, and Katlin Piirimae, who won bronze with an Estonian national junior record of 16.80m.

McKinna is coached by legendary British shot putter Geoff Capes, a double European Athletics Indoor champion.

She is the British junior record holder with 17.12m and is looking to increase her standards this year as she aims to make the English team for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July.

“I am really excited to be heading to Portugal,' said McKinna. 'The European Cup Winter Throws is very significant because it gives me a golden opportunity to hopefully achieve another Glasgow 2014 qualifying standard (17.10m).

'It also gives me a great international competition early in the year to test myself at the top level.'

There will be live streaming of the European Cup Winter Throwing at the following link: http://vsprt.com/ItIMqf.

The stream will be free to view, users simply needing to sign into the website. Videos of the individual throws will be available on demand after the event and can be played back in slow motion.

Video interviews from the event will be uploaded at www.youtube.com/EuropeanAthletics after the competition.
