If the clock is turned back 12 months, both Ivana Spanovic and Amela Terzic were on the cusp of something special.

Joining forces this weekend, they can now play a big part in Serbia's bid for promotion from the Second League of the European Athletics Team Championships which takes place in Riga.

They are here with medals and great adulation from their own country after performances in 2013 which show they can both be around for a long time.

And such is the strength of the pair that they will be doubling on Saturday and Sunday to chase maximum points.

Long jumper Spanovic is back in the rich vein of form which saw her make the podium in Moscow with bronze, the first Serbian athlete to win a medal at an outdoor World Championships.

She achieved it with 6.82m, a national record she has improved this summer to 6.88m. That mark puts her second in the European Athletics rankings, and she is the stand out performer in the event.

But she will not be able to rest on her laurels as Latvia's Aiga Grabuste has recorded a personal best this year of 6.69m and Irene Pusterla, of Switzerland, has cleared 6.60m.

Spanovic also competes in the triple jump and she will need all her speed on the runway for an event where her personal best of 13.54m makes her the fourth best in the field on distances, led by Slovakia's Dana Veldakova, who has a lifetime best of 14.51m and has jumped 13.90m in 2014.

Terzic won gold in the 1500m at the European Athletics Under-23 Championships in Tampere 11 months ago just a few weeks after running the double she is repeating in Riga when, in Kaunas, she was first in the 1500m and third in the 800m.

This Second League has eight teams - Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Latvia, Serbia, Switzerland and Slovakia - and with it some of Europe's leading women athletes.

Croatia, in particular, should bank victories in the discus, with world number 1 Sandra Perkovic, and, the high jump, with Ana Simic, whose 1.98m in Beijing last month puts her fourth on the global list. Equally, Bulgaria will be hoping for a double sprint success in the 100m and 200m.

Ivet Lalova, the European 100m champion, tops the European Athletics' rankings with 11.10 and with her in the 4x100m relay squad as well, her country have a chance of making an impression in that event too.
