Dutch duo in command

Home
They were the two that the rest of the competitors knew they had to beat and so it is proving after Eelco Sintnicolaas and Nadine Broersen gave the Netherlands a clear lead at the end of the opening day of the European Cup Combined Events 1st League.

Overnight in Nottwil, Switzerland, the Netherlands are top of the table with 22,136 points from the hosts in second with 21,261 with the Czech Republic third with 21,237.

Sintnicolaas won the heptathlon at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Göteborg in March and last month Broersen finished second in the heptathlon in Gotzis in a great year for multi-eventing for the Netherlands.

Even though Sintnicolaas failed to complete the decathlon in Gotzis, not entering the final event, the 1500m, he is back in command here with an individual lead with 4112 points from Spain's Jonay Jordan with 3908 and Nicklas Wiberg, of Sweden, third with 3890.

But in this competition where men's and women's team points are combined, Sintnicolaas has great support as teammate Bas Markies is fourth with 3840 and Pim Jehee ninth with 3758.

It is a similar story in the heptathlon where the with Broersen leading with 3696 from Eliska Klucinova, of the Czech Republic, second with 3572, and Switzerland's Ellen Sprunger, third with 3499.

The Netherlands' Myrte Goor is back in sixth with 3441 and Amanda Spiljard in ninth with 3289.

Sintnicolaas had a great start to the day with the quickest time in the 100m, of 10.94, before finishing second in the long jump with 7.16m as teammate Jehee cleared 7.18m.

Spain's Jordan won the shot put with a personal best of 14.42m with Sintnicolaas fifth with 13.53m.
Then he finished third in the high jump with 1.98m as Switzerland's Flavien Antille equalled his PB to win with 2.04m.

Sintnicolaas ended the first day with the leading points from the 400m where his time in winning the fourth heat in 48.16 was the fastest in the field.

Broersen stamped her authority on the heptathlon from the first event, the 100m hurdles, which she won in 13.51 and then shared first place in the high jump on 1.81m with Klucinova.

Next for Broersen was a personal best of 14.34m in the shot which won her the event before the only discipline she did not triumph, the 200m, where Sprunger had the best time of 23.90 as Broersen was seventh overall after finishing third in the race behind her Swiss rival in 25.53.

In the European Cup Combined Events 2nd League in Ribeira Brava, Norway lead after the opening day with 20,735 points from Romania with 20,588 and the hosts Portugal with 20,227.

And while Norway's Lars Vikan Rise is at the head of the field in the decathlon with 3938, Beatrice Puiu is in charge in the heptathlon with 3661, the fourth best score across all three leagues of this competition.

Puiu won the first three disciplines, the 100m hurdles in 13.46, the high jump with 1.81m and the shot with 14m, before being fourth overall in the 200m with 25.74 as Ireland's Kelly Proper was quickest with 24.12.
Rise won two of his five events, the shot put with 15.68m and the high jump with 1.98m, while he was 11th in the 100m in 11.61 as Portugal's Samuel Remedios was the fastest with 10.95.

In the long jump, Rise was joint fifth after reaching 6.89m as top points were shared by Portugal's Tiago Marto and Norway's Hans Olav Uldal with 7.15m while Romania's Ionel Irinel Cojan won the 400m in 49.45 and Rise's time of 50.26 was fifth quickest overall.
