European Athletics is pleased to announce that it is committed to supporting and participating in the 2015 European Week of Sport in collaboration with the European Commission.
As part of the European Week of Sport, European Athletics will work to ensure that one or more mass participation running races in each Erasmus+ programme country will be part of the week itself (7-13 September) or the promotional period that runs till 30 September.
President Svein Arne Hansen said, “European Athletics has signed a Letter of Intent with the European Commission to be a partner in the European Week of Sport, and is committed to help promote sport and physical activity at the EU level. We will work with many of our Member Federations to encourage as many road races as possible across Europe to sign up to the European Week of Sport and to promote its message of ‘#BeActive’.”
The European Week of Sport aims to promote sport and physical activity across the continent, in light of evidence that shows that levels of participation in sport and physical activity in the EU are stagnating and in some Member states falling.
The Week is for everyone, regardless of age, background or fitness level. With a focus on grassroots initiatives, the aim is to inspire Europeans to #BeActive on a regular basis and create opportunities in peoples’ everyday lives to exercise more.
European Athletics’ role in promoting the European Week of Sport will be in parallel to the promotion of “European Athletics Running for All”, which positions European Athletics as an active part of the running movement in Europe that strives to support runners and race organisers across its 50 Member Federations.
As a cornerstone of Running for All, European Athletics has developed, with the help of leading running experts, a set of safety and quality standards for public road races.
