After 10 European victories in Glasgow, European Athletics President Karamarinov looks back at the World Athletics Indoor Championships  and forward to Roma 2024 and Apeldoorn 2025.

“Firstly, many congratulations to all the European medallists in Glasgow and especially the 10 that were victorious there.

“In addition, I would like to point out one world record, one championship record, seven world-leading marks, and 29 national records were established by European athletes.

“It was certainly a successful and inspiring three days of competition from a continental perspective.

“However, I am sure no one will begrudge me if I say that the highlight in terms of performance was undoubtably Femke Bol’s 49.17 world indoor record over 400m.

“I am already excited to see what she will do at the European Athletics Championships in Rome and the European Athletics Indoor Championships on home soil in Apeldoorn in 12 months.

“It was very pleasing to see that these championships were well supported by our continent’s top stars, and now with the indoor season at an end, Europe’s attention turns towards the outdoors, we all look forward to our showpiece event this summer, the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships.

“Many of Europe’s leading athletes in Glasgow also spoke about how important Roma 2024 is in their preparation for the Olympic Games in Paris."

“Personally, I had a very busy four days in Glasgow discussing and expanding upon the European Athletics Strategic Roadmap with my colleagues on the World Athletics Council as well as meeting many of our sport’s stakeholders, both domestic and international, who are active in Europe in various ways across all sectors and can help it continue to prosper.

“The 2026 European Athletics Championships will also be staged in Great Britain, when Birmingham will be the host city, and being in Glasgow gave me the opportunity to discuss with British minister of sport Stuart Andrew its successful delivery.

“Once again congratulations to each and every athlete and I am looking forward to welcome you all in Roma!”
