The 10 nominees for the annual female Athlete of the Year award have been announced across Twitter and Facebook as part of the social media vote with the nominees for the male award to be announced this evening.

The winner of the male and female Rising Star and Athlete of the Year awards will be presented with their accolades at the annual Golden Tracks award ceremony in Lausanne, Switzerland on Friday 26 October.

The social media vote accounts for 25 percent of the overall vote with the media vote, Member Federation vote and the European Athletics Expert Panel vote also accounting for 25 percent of the vote each.

Voting remains open on social media until 12.00 CET on Friday 5 October. The votes on Twitter and Facebook will be combined in order to determine the outcome of the social media vote.

The three finalists in each category will be announced shortly after on social media.

The European Athlete of the Year award has been handed out annually since 1993 when Brits Linford Christie and Sally Gunnell were crowned. Winners since then have included Jan Zelezny, Renaud Lavillenie, Mo Farah, Gabriela Szabo, Blanka Vlasic and Dafne Schippers.

Last year’s winner was Greece's Ekaterini Stefanidi who won gold medals at both the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade and at the IAAF World Championships in London.
