Great Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen have been voted European Athletes of the Month for October 2019.
The votes took place across European Athletics’ Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts and the five days of voting closed at 12:00pm CET on Monday. More than 36,000 votes were cast across the three platforms.
On the women’s side, world heptathlon champion Johnson-Thompson accrued 4212 votes to win the accolade ahead of world long jump champion Malaika Mihambo from Germany with 3211 votes and world high jump champion Mariya Lasitskene with 3171 votes.
Johnson-Thompson added the world heptathlon title to her world indoor pentathlon title in Doha last month, accruing a world leading score of 6981 points which took her beyond Jessica Ennis-Hill’s British record of 6955 points which had stood since the 2012 Olympics.

On the men’s side, Ingebrigtsen tallied an incredible 8135 votes, almost twice the number of runner-up Niklas Kaul from Germany with 4452 votes.
After finishing fifth in the 5000m and fourth in the 1500m at the IAAF World Athletics Championships, Ingebrigtsen concluded his illustrious junior career by setting a European U20 10km best of 27:54 on his debut at the distance at the Hytteplanmila in Hole. His time also eclipsed the Norwegian record by one second.
The European Athlete of the Month initiative was launched in 2007 and five male and five female athletes are nominated based solely on their performances in the previous month. No athlete who has served a doping ban of two years or longer can be nominated for the award.
