Nadine Muller won the discus in Leiria to take the senior title for the fourth time at the European Cup Winter Throwing on Sunday.
This weekend was the 15th staging of this world-class event and she has some record having also lifted the under-23 crown eight years ago.With a second round throw of 65.27m, Germany’s Muller triumphed ahead of France’s Melina Robert-Michon, the world and European silver medallist, who was second with 64.75m and Irina Rodrigues, of Portugal, who was third with a personal best of 63.25m.
In fourth with 63.22m was Muller’s German teammate Shanice Craft, the bronze medallist from last year’s European Athletics Championships in Zurich.Muller won her first event at this European Cup Winter Throwing in Yalta in 2007 when she took the under-23 title with 60.35m before lifting the senior event in Arles with 64.30m in 2010. Then, in Bar two years later, she threw a brilliant 68.89m personal best for victory and successfully defended the crown 12 months later when she won in Castellon with 66.69m.
Spain’s Borja Vivas finally found himself a winner again as he took the men’s shot put with 20.15m.
The Zurich silver medallist was fourth nine days earlier at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Prague and is set to be one of Europe’s leading men this summer.
He won with his third round effort and also reached 20.14m in the last round as he beat Sweden’s Leif Arrhenius with 20.09m with his Spanish teammate Carlos Tobalina third on countback with 20.04m from France’s Gaetan Bucki.
Russian Valerly Iordan’s 83.00m javelin throw in the third round was enough to defeat Germany’s Diamond League champion Thomas Rohler who only really challenged in the last round with 81.83m for second as he overtook Türkiye’s Fatih Avan who had led with his opening effort of 81.45m.
Round four was where the women’s hammer was decided after France’s Alexandra Tavernier had put herself in front with her first throw of 70.45m.
But Russian Anna Bulgakova took over with 72.06m in an event where Zurich bronze medallist Joanna Fiodorow, of Poland, finished second after her fifth round 70.90m.
As on the opening day on Saturday, the Cup produced a series of fine junior records on Sunday, with excellent performances from two world youth champions.
Slovenia’s Matija Muhar broke the national junior mark as he won with 77.60m while in the B section of the women’s hammer, Hungary’s Reka Gyuratz reached 67.98m as she finished second behind France’s Audrey Ciofani with 68.20m.
The men’s shot put had three records from the top four.
Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Mesud Pezer won with an national under-23 best of 19.44m as he beat Poland’s Krzysztof Brzozowski with 19.27m, while in third, Romania’s Andrei Toader broke the national junior record with 18.94m and in fourth, Macedonia’s Tomas Djurovic broke the overall national record with 18.54m.
