Estonia’s Erki Nool, the 2000 Olympic decathlon champion, will provide insight into his country’s youth-coaching practices at an international youth coaching seminar to be held at the Tanhuvaara Sports Institute in Savonlinna, Finland, on 1–2 April.

“Nool’s views will be very enlightening to hear. Since the 2000s, Estonia has produced top athletes such as discus thrower Gerd Kanter, hurdler Rasmus Mägi, and decathlete Mikk Pahapill,” says Jarmo Hirvonen, one of the organisers with the sports institute.

Sami Kalaja, director of the Research Institute for Olympic Sports (KIHU) in Finland, will also be speaking at the two-day programme, focusing on the significance of skill development.

The programme will shed light on the significance of skill development, factors contributing to the success and quality of training programmes for children and adolescents as well as ways of getting children hooked on sports.

Finnish long jumper Kristian Pulli and javelin thrower Heidi Nokelainen will also talk about their own paths to elite sports.

Visitors arriving on Friday will enjoy an opportunity for networking and informal discussions at an evening event.

The deadline for signing up for the seminar is 10 March 2017, to register contact: [email protected]
