Three familiar family names are present in the 3rd SPAR European Team Championships start lists: Poland’s Karol Hoffman in the men’s triple jump, Great Britain’s Eilish McColgan in the women’s 3000m steeplechase and Yelizaveta Bryzhina, who is part of the Ukraine women’s 4x100m squad.
It's not surprising if people recognise the names because the trio are all offspring of former world champions.
Karol, 22, is the son of the 1983 World Championships triple jump gold medallist Zdzislaw Hoffman.
However, Hoffman junior has an opportunity to go one better than his father at this early stage of his career as the latter never won at the former European Cup, coming second in 1983 and 1987.
Eilish, 20, is the daughter of 1991 World Championships 10000m winner Liz McColgan but, like Zdzislaw Hoffman, despite winning a gold medal on the global stage she never won a European Cup race.
The 21-year-old Bryzhina won the 2010 European Athletics Championships 200m silver medal, is the daughter of 1987 World Championships and 1988 Olympic Games 400m gold medallist Olga Bryzhina.
Unlike her two counterparts, Bryzhina not only knows what it is like to win at the SPAR European Team Championships after having won over 200m in Bergen 12 months ago, in what was then a personal best of 22.71, but she was carrying on the family tradition.
Her mother, running under the name of Olga Vladykina before she got married to the former Soviet Union international sprinter Viktor Bryzhin - who was part of the gold medal winning 4x100m team at the 1988 Olympic Games – won over 400m at the 1985 European Cup.
