Reigning European U20 champions Silja Kosonen, Saga Vanninen and Ilona Mononen feature on Finland’s initial team for the Espoo 2023 European Athletics U23 Championships from 13-16 July.

The full Finnish team will be announced next week and team leader Eeva Kantomäki believes the delegation could comprise up to 70 athletes.

“At the moment, it seems the final size of the team will be large, up to 70 athletes. It is helped by the fact that all the relays have already broken the required average times,” she said.

Kosonen won the hammer with a championship record of 71.06m in Tallinn two years ago and the 20-year-old will be looking to add to her title haul on home soil next month. She leads the 2023 European senior list with a recently set lifetime best of 73.78m.

Vanninen, who is also a two-time world U20 heptathlon champion, has also improved in her specialist event this year and leads the European U23 list with her score of 6391 points from the Götzis Hypo-Meeting.

Mononen won the 3000m in Tallinn two years ago and the 19-year-old is planning to double up in Espoo. She has been named on the Finnish team in both the 1500m and 5000m.

The championships will be streamed in its entirety through the European Athletics website with additional streams available on the All-Athletics platform.

The initial Finnish team can be found here.
