Volunteer registration for the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships is now open with over 2,000 available positions.

- First application phase runs through to 30 June 2017

- 1,800 pre-registrations already received

Volunteers are always an important pillar of major sport competitions worldwide and shape the face of every event. An army of volunteers who sacrifice their spare time and with enthusiasm, idealism and wish for a special community experience earn the sympathies of visitors and participants alike. Berlin 2018 will also be shaped by volunteers – and the application phase for volunteers has started.

There are many different motivations to apply to be a volunteer for Berlin 2018: being part of a special community, experiencing athletes and big moments at a major event up close, or enthusiasm for the sport and enjoyment in interacting with people. If you would like to take part and give Germany´s largest sports event in 2018 a face, the registration portal at http://www.berlin2018.info/volunteers/ opened 7 April.

A total of more than 2,000 volunteers are being sought. The available roles stretch from transportation, visitor services, accommodation, accreditation and sport to media and protocol. The interest was already high in the pre-registration phase with almost 1,800 applications. Now it´s becoming more tangible as applicants can enter their skills and preferences into a detailed profile.

This first application phase runs through to 30 June 2017. Thereafter, personal interviews will take place up until October. By the end of the year it will be decided who will be able to join the Berlin 2018 volunteer team. The one basic requirement for an application is that volunteers must be 18 years of age at the time of their first volunteer assignment.

For the implementation of the volunteer program, Berlin 2018 is working with SOLID – Event Management + Consulting GmbH. Among other things, the company played a key role in the delivery of the Winter Youth Olympic Games Innsbruck 2012 and provided consulting for volunteer management at major events such as the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships St. Moritz 2017.

Frank Kowalski, managing director of Berlin 2018, said: “The volunteer program has a very high priority in our preparations. Our volunteers will be the face of this European Athletics Championships throughout the city and in the stadium. Especially here in Berlin they are sure to bring a great feel-good factor to visitors and athletes with ‘heart and snout’ as we say Berlin.”

The 24th European Athletics Championships 2018 will take place 7-12 August 2018. For the first time they will be held in the Berlin Olympic stadium and on the streets of the sports metropolis Berlin (walking and marathon). In total 47 disciplines will be held distributed over six competition days. Around 1,600 Athletes from 51 European Athletics Member Federations will take part.

Berlin 2018 will be part of the inaugural multisport European Championships with co-hosts Glasgow. The Championships, involving seven of Europe’s leading sports, will take place from Thursday 2 August to Sunday 12 August 2018, with 10 days of compelling television coverage starting Friday 3 August. Aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, golf, rowing and triathlon will be held in Scotland, with Berlin staging the athletics.
