More than 34,000 votes were cast on social media across the voting period and Karsten Warholm from Norway and Konstanze Klosterhalfen from Germany were both voted European Athletes of the Month for August.
Warholm extended his unbeaten season with three more exceptional performances in the 400m hurdles. He began his month with victory at the Norwegian Championships in 47.43 before returning from illness to win the Paris Diamond League in 47.26.
For the first time this season Warholm faced off with American Rai Benjamin and in a race for the ages in the Zurich Diamond League, the reigning world and European champion fended off his American rival to win in another European record of 46.92 - the second fastest time in history behind Kevin Young’s world record of 46.78.
Warholm accumulated 5508 votes ahead of Estonia’s Magnus Kirt (4208 votes) and Poland’s Michal Haratyk (2779 votes).
Klosterhalfen was also in record-breaking form last month, taking a gun-to-tape win in the 5000m at the German Championships in Berlin where she smashed the national record with 14:26.76 - lapping almost the entire field in the process.
Klosterhalfen also won the mile in the Birmingham Diamond League in a national outdoor record of 4:21.11 before finishing second in the 1500m to training partner Sifan Hassan in the Zurich Diamond League in 3:59.02.
Klosterhalfen accrued 5043 votes ahead of German teammate Malaika Mihambo (3633 votes) and Anzhelika Sidorova (3209 votes).
