  • Arco set to host 2016 European Mountain Running Championships

The 2016 European Mountain Running Championships are set to take place on 2 July in Arco, a commune located in the Trentino region in the Northeast of Italy.

The Trentino is an impressive mountainous area which offers many opportunities for outdoors sports. Travellers from across the globe gather to take part in mountain climbing, trekking and winter sport activities.

It’s hard to think of a better place for mountain running, but despite such a beautiful and healthy setting, it is sure to be a challenge for the athletes, who will have to use all their skill, stamina and tactical thinking to conquer the challenging course.

The European Mountain Running Championships has been a keenly contested annual event since its introduction. It will be no different during the 15th staging of the event, where more than 250 athletes from around 25 countries are expected to compete.

Andrea Mayr of Austria will be seeking her fourth consecutive win in the senior women’s race while Norway’s Johan Bugge will attempt to defend his title from last year. He will have to watch out for Italy’ Bernard Dematteis one of the continent’s strongest mountain runners who will be keen to claim victory at home.

In the team event, four athletes are allowed to compete per country, the positions of the three best athletes are then added together to create the team scores.

Last year, Italy won the senior men's title with Great Britain prevailing on the senior women’s side. Türkiye was able to secure the men's junior prize while Germany’s Sarah Kistner led her team to glory in the women’s junior race.
