Sweden’s Armand Duplantis and Germany’s Konstanze Klosterhalfen have been voted European Athletes of the Month for February 2020.

Almost 36,000 votes were cast on European Athletics’ Facebook, Twitter and Instagram account across the five days of voting. Duplantis accrued an incredible tally of 10,957 votes on the men’s side with Klosterhalfen topping the women’s voting with 4194 votes.

Duplantis put together an unprecedented campaign in February, twice breaking the world pole vault record with 6.17m in Torun and 6.18m in Glasgow. He cleared 6.00m or higher in five successive competitions - a feat only achieved previously by Sergey Bubka in 1991.

Klosterhalfen also enjoyed a record-breaking campaign in February. The world 5000m bronze medallist set national records over 1500m (3:59.87) and the mile (4:17.26) at the Millrose Games in New York on 8 February and ended her season by smashing the European indoor 5000m record with 14:30.79 in Boston at the end of the month.

The European Athlete of the Month initiative was launched in 2007 and three male and five female athletes have been nominated based purely on their performances in the previous month. No athlete who has served a doping ban of two years or longer can be nominated for the award.
