Some big distances could be on show at the European Throwing Cup with warm and sunny conditions expected to be forecast in Gran Canaria on 11-12 March.

The annual event represents the first chance for most throwers to test their shape and technique against top-level international competition before the outdoor season begins in earnest in May.

French veteran Melina Robert-Michon was one thrower to reach top form in her first competition of the season. The 37-year-old went out to 62.05m and maintained this form all the way through the season, culminating with a silver medal at the Olympic Games where she improved her French record to 66.73m.

Another thrower to put down an early marker was former European junior champion Julian Weber. He won the under-23 division with a lifetime best of 81.24m before adding another seven metres to his personal best over the summer season which ended with a throw of 88.29m on home soil in Berlin.

By contrast, Sara Kolak only finished second in the under-23 javelin with 58.11m but went on to win a bronze medal at the European Championships and a surprise gold medal at the Olympic Games.

The home nation could fare particularly well in the men’s shot put next March courtesy of Borja Vivas and Carlos Tobalina who threw 20.72m and 20.50m respectively last season while perennial domestic champion Javier Cienfuegos will be looking to improve on his fourth-place finish in the men’s hammer.
