French pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie and Serbian long jumper Ivana Spanovic have been voted European Athletes of the Month for September.

Voting for European Athlete of the Month took place through our European Athletics Twitter and Facebook pages over the past week. Athletes with the most combined Twitter ‘retweets’ and Facebook ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ were crowned the winners.

With more than 2,000 combined likes, retweets & shares, Spanovic was the winner on the women’s side having claimed the Diamond Race long jump trophy in Zurich. The European champion then followed that up with a national record of 7.10m on home soil during a street event in Belgrade.

Meanwhile, Lavillenie won on the men’s side with 1,000 mentions winning the award for the first time of the year.

The Frenchman cleared 5.90m in Zurich to clinch his seventh successive Diamond Race trophy in September. He is the only athlete to have won all Diamond Race trophies in an event since its introduction back in 2010.
