Sergey Shubenkov and Mariya Kuchina, whose brilliant summer saw them both crowned world champions in Beijing, have retained their titles as the Russian Athletes of the Year.

European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen was in Moscow on Monday as Shubenkov and Kuchina received their awards at the Russian Athletics Gala, the highlight of the inaugural Russian Athletics Convention.

It was also a time of celebration for Sergey Klevtsov, who guided Shubenkov to glory in Beijing, as he was named Russia’s Coach of the Year for the second time in a row.

Furthermore, the European Athletics Team Championships in Cheboksary was selected as the Event of the Year in Russia and high jumper Anna Chicherova was given special recognition for winning her fifth medal in consecutive IAAF World Championships with her bronze in Beijing.

Shubenkov, 25, followed up his superb 2014, where he retained the 110m hurdles gold at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich, with a series of brilliant outdoor performances.

He won his event (13.22) at the European Athletics Team Championships at home in Cheboksary to help Russia take the title for a fourth time before breaking the national record to triumph at the IAAF World Championships.

A bronze medallist in Moscow two years earlier, Shubenkov was the only man to break 13 seconds as he won gold in 12.98.

High jumper Kuchina, 22, did not just one win gold this year - but two.

Her run of success started in March at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Prague when she triumphed in a jump-off with Italy’s Alessia Trost to secure the title.

Like Shubenkov, she also banked maximum points in Cheboksary in June, as 1.99m brought her success as one of 10 Russian winners at the European Athletics Team Championships.

It took her to Beijing as the athlete to beat - and no-one could. She won on countback with 2.01m, after a perfect series of first-time clearances at six heights.

IAAF President Sebastian Coe presented their awards, accompanied by All-Russia Athletics Federation President Vadim Zelichenok and Yuriy Borzakovskiy, Head Coach of Russian athletics.

The Rising Star award went to Konstantin Tolokonnikov, 19, who had a fabulous four days at the European Athletics Junior Championships in Eskilstuna in July.

Tolokonnikov won silver in the 800m (1:49.00) and then ran the third leg as Russia took gold in the 4x400m relay (3:08.35).

Stepping up to senior level, he then reached the semi-finals at the world championships (1:48.32).
