  • Slovenia and Lithuania earn promotion to the 1st League in Kaunas
Slovenia finished as the clear winners of the European Athletics Team Championships 2nd League in Kaunas accumulating a total of 221 points on Sunday. Along with the home team Lithuania, who finished second with 209 points, Slovenia earned a promotion to the 1st League of the championships to be held in June next year.

Serbia and Croatia followed suit with 192 and 178.5 points respectively. Denmark finished fifth with
171.5, while Austria managed to avoid relegation finishing sixth with 161 points.

The last two finishers in the 2nd League, Cyprus (155) and Israel (150) were relegated to the 3rd league.

On the final day of the two-day championships, Slovenia only managed to secure four wins but almost every athlete from the country contributed in ensuring they finish the championships on top.

Jan Zumer won the men's 200m clocking 21.22 (0.0), while Matija Kranjc gathered maximum points in javelin with a throw of 73.36, hammer thrower Barbara Spiler also showed her class winning her event in 68.22.

Some of the Serbian athletes registered emphatics wins on Sunday, most notably European cross country junior champion Amela Terzic's victory in the 1500m in 4:26.83 and Mirko Petrovic's tactical 3000m win in 8:27.75. Olivera Jevtic also registered an equally impressive victory in the 5000m 15:59.94 may have lifted the team spirits, but a number of low scores did not help their cause.

Cyprus' Milan Trajkovic won the 110m hurdles in a national record 13.67 ahead of Andreas Martinsen who set a Danish national record of 13.68. Austria were the only team who failed to score a solitary win on Sunday but still managed to avoid relegation.
