British distance running veteran Chris Thompson will defend his title at the Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run, a five-star certified road race by European Athletics Running for All, on 30 September.

Now 37, Thompson has enjoyed one of his best seasons to date. He clocked 27:52.56 at the European 10,000m Cup in London - his fastest time in five seasons - and finished ninth in the 5000m and eleventh in the 10,000m at the European Championships in Berlin.

After a return to form on the track this summer, Thompson is looking to turn his attention back to the roads with the New York Marathon in November his main target of the autumn road racing campaign.

“I’m really looking forward to returning to Glasgow to defend my title at Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run. The people of Glasgow really know their sport and they always turn out in large numbers at this race,” said Thompson.

“This is an important milestone in my preparations for the New York City Marathon, so I’m determined to run well here as I look forward to November.”

The line-up also includes fellow GB Olympian Tsegai Tewelde and double Commonwealth marathon champion Michael Shelley from Australia. Top names in the women’s race include reigning world marathon champion Rose Chelimo from Bahrain and 2015 world marathon champion Mare Dibaba from Ethiopia.

More than 30,000 runners took part across all events at last year’s edition of the Great Scottish Run.
