Spain has announced a particularly strong men&rsquo;s team for the European 10,000m Cup which takes place in Pac&eacute;, France on 3 June.
The Spaniards are the most successful nation in European 10,000m Cup history. They have won 24 gold medals in total since the first edition in 1997, including 10 team titles in the senior men&rsquo;s race.
Their last title as a collective dates back to the 2018 European 10,000m Cup in London but the Spaniards will be confident of challenging for both individual and team honours in Pac&eacute; next month.
The standout name on their team is Carlos Mayo, the fastest of their team of six runners with a lifetime best of 27:25.00. Mayo has finished third and second individually in the last two editions and will be looking for an elusive individual title to complement his team gold medals from 2017 and 2018.
The line-up also includes Roberto Alaiz, Juan Antonio Perez and Yago Rojo, all of whom were also part of Spain&rsquo;s silver medal-winning team behind hosts France last year. Perez will be making his eighth successive appearance in the competition and has also amassed three individual silver medals between 2015 and 2017.

Recently crowned Spanish 10,000m champion Ilias Fifa is also on the team.&nbsp;
On the women&rsquo;s side, Paula Herrero will be making her debut for Spain in a major competition. Primarily a triathlete, Herrero has already left an indelible mark on the domestic distance running scene by breaking the Spanish 10km record in March with 31:23.
Herrero also finished a close second at the Spanish 10,000m Championships in late March, finishing second to Isabel Barreiro - 32:03.37 to 32:05.35. They are currently ranked second and third respectively on the 2023 European 10,000m list.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mayo headlines Spain’s European 10,000m Cup team for Pacé

One month today (3), some of Europe&rsquo;s best distance runners will converge on Pac&eacute; in north-west France for the 26th European 10,000m Cup. But what&rsquo;s the history of this competition, which has seen the likes of world and Olympic champions Mo Farah, Fernanda Ribeiro and Paula Radcliffe take victories in the past?
It dates back to 1997, when the competition was first held under its initial title of the European 10,000m Challenge. For the first five years, it took place on the Iberian Peninsula as its forerunner was the Iberian 10,000m Championships &ndash; an annual Spain versus Portugal competition that took place between 1991 and 1996.
The European 10,000m Cup was first held under its current title in 2005 and since then has been held in 10 different countries. This year, it heads to Pac&eacute; for the second year running, and where the 2024 edition will also be held.
Famous past champions include multiple winners Fernanda Ribeiro from Portugal (1998 and 2003), fellow Portuguese runner Sara Moreira (2011, 2012 and 2017) and Great Britain's Paula Radcliffe (1999 and 2001) among the women, along with Germany's Dieter Baumann (1997), Spain's Jose Manuel Martinez (2004 and 2009), Great Britain's Mo Farah (2010) and Italy's Daniele Meucci (2016) on the men&rsquo;s side.

But the European 10,000m Cup is a team event too, and in the last 10 years Great Britain has won six women&rsquo;s team races while Portugal has the most women's team titles with 10 dating back to 1997. France has won the last two men&rsquo;s team titles and Italy four of the seven prior to that, but Spain has the most men&rsquo;s team titles with 10.
In terms of cumulative individual honours, Spain also sits on top of the medal table with 69 medals, including 24 gold, 26 silver and 19 bronze, ahead of Portugal, France and Great Britain.
<h2>A look back at Pac&eacute; 2022</h2>
Last year&rsquo;s event in Pac&eacute; was the 25th anniversary of the European 10,000m Cup and it didn&rsquo;t disappoint. Jimmy Gressier won the men's race in 27:24.51, leading France to a successful defence of its team title.
In only his second track 10,000m, three years after winning the European U23 title in Gavle, Gressier smashed his lifetime best with 27:24.51. He would go on to finish fourth in the 10,000m at last year&rsquo;s European Athletics Championships in Munich before setting a European 5km record of 13:12 in Monaco earlier this year.

In the women&rsquo;s race, T&uuml;rkiye&rsquo;s multiple European champion Yasemin Can delivered a blistering fourth kilometre of 3:02.74 to break up the field. She held on to win on her European 10,000m Cup debut in a time of 31:20.18. A few months later, Can went on to win her third European senior title, taking 10,000m gold in Munich.

<h2>Looking ahead to Pac&eacute; 2023&nbsp;</h2>
The French team for the 2023 European 10,000m Cup will be without reigning individual champion Jimmy Gressier but the hosts have still named a team full of depth and experience which includes Felix Bour and Fabien Palcau who have lifetime bests of 27:51.22 and 28:07.01 respectively.
And there will be optimism of a rare individual French medal in the women's race with Mekdes Woldu named in the quartet. Woldu made an auspicious marathon debut in the Hamburg Marathon at the end of April, clocking 2:26:34 to achieve the qualifying time for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Her 10,000m lifetime best stands at 32:11.73.
The biggest threat to the hosts in the men's team race will come from the Spaniards who will be seeking their eleventh title as a collective. Their team includes Carlos Mayo, who has finished third and second individually at the last two editions of the European 10,000m Cup and has the fastest lifetime best of the quintet with 27:25.00.&nbsp;

But the athlete to beat for the individual men's title could be Italy's reigning European 10,000m champion Yemaneberhan Crippa. Crippa is planning to refocus on the track this summer after making his marathon debut this spring, clocking 2:08:57 in the Milan Marathon.

One month to go until Pacé 2023! A brief history of the European 10,000m Cup

German record-holder Amanal Petros achieved the milestone of his first big city marathon victory in the Hannover Marathon on Sunday (26) in a course record of 2:07:02.
But the German is planning to drop down in distance over the course of the summer. Petros has his sights on the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August and the 26-year-old is looking to achieve the 10,000m qualifying time of 27:10 at the European 10,000m Cup in Pac&eacute;, France on 3 June.
Petros finished second at the European 10,000m Cup in 2019 before shifting his focus to the marathon - and with palpable success. He represented Germany at the distance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, finished fourth on home soil at the Munich 2022 European Athletics Championships and has also lowered the national record down to 2:06:27.
His winning time of 2:07:02 in Hannover was the second fastest of his career thus far. After the race, Petros spoke to Leichtathletik.de in depth about the race and his plans for the summer season. <h3>What does it mean to you to have won your first marathon in Germany and also to have set a new course record?</h3>
Amanal Petros: The course record was the goal. That means a lot to me and is a huge motivation. I have never run a city marathon in Germany. It's quite an experience. I'm super excited and can't wait to come back, be even better prepared and run an even better time. I met so many friendly people this weekend; it was a great pleasure.

<h3>So what is your plan for the rest of the season?</h3>
Amanal Petros: I will train for the 10,000m and maybe 5000m. I want to focus on short distances to improve my speed. I thought I hung up my spikes more than two years ago; now I need to get them back and go find them so I can work on the track. From the end of May I would like to train at altitude again.
<h3>Are you also planning on the track for the World Championships in Budapest?</h3>
Amanal Petros: Yes, in any case. First of all, the goal is to tick off the World Championships qualifying standard. I would also like to run the European 10,000m Cup.
<h3>You have already shown what you can do on the road this year with a new German 10km record of 27:32. What do you expect on the track then?</h3>
Amanal Petros: I think if I can run 27:20-27:15 on the track, my marathon will be much faster in the future. That's the goal, and that's why I'm now orienting myself back down to the shorter distances.
<h3>You have now run a spring marathon in Germany, are you also aiming for an autumn marathon, especially since you have been part of the SCC Berlin marathon team since this year?</h3>
Amanal Petros: Yes, the marathon in Berlin is the big goal. This is of course the most special marathon in the world. I have very high expectations and will prepare myself from now on. But I don't want to reveal too much about it just yet.

The European 10,000m Cup dates from 1997 when it was held under its initial title of the European 10,000m Challenge.&nbsp;
Notable names on the roll-of-honour at the Cup include Spain's Jose Manuel Martinez (2004 and 2009), Great Britain's Mo Farah (2010) and Italians Daniele Meucci (2016) and Yemaneberhan Crippa (2019, 2023) on the men&rsquo;s side and multiple winners Fernanda Ribeiro from Portugal (1998 and 2003), fellow Portuguese runner Sara Moreira (2011, 2012 and 2017) and Great Britain's Paula Radcliffe (1999 and 2001) among the women.
At the 2023 edition in Pac&eacute;, Yemaneberhan Crippa powered to his second European 10,000m Cup title and while Alina Reh upgraded her individual silver to gold in the women's race. Israel won their first ever team title in the men's race while Reh led Germany to back-to-back team titles in the women's race.
The European 10,000m Cup in 2024, originally foreseen to take place in Pac&eacute;/FRA on 11 May 2024 will not be staged as a stand-alone event. Instead, owing to the early position on next year&rsquo;s calendar of the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships, European Athletics has added 10,000m B finals to its programme for Rome.
This will give European distance runners further opportunities to compete in the event. Member Federations will be encouraged to add additional 10,000m runners to the teams travelling to the championships. Technical details concerning the Roma 2024 European Athletics Championships will be released shortly.

Reigning European 10,000m champion Yemaneberhan Crippa from Italy unleashed a 55-second last lap to win a competitive men&rsquo;s race at the European 10,000m Cup in Pac&eacute;, France, on Saturday (3) evening.
Windy conditions made for an intriguing contest, with a large group of athletes reaching the halfway mark in 14:13.55. With 1600m to go, the Italian made his first move, whittling the leading pack down to six men who all remained in contention until Spain's Ilias Fifa picked up the pace once more with two laps remaining.
Crippa has shown his finishing speed before - not least in Munich last year when he won the European title with an incredible sprint finish - and this time, he hit the bell in the lead before kicking away to just hold off Israel&rsquo;s Tadesse Getahon and take gold in 28:08.83.

It was a spirited effort from former European U23 5000m silver medallist Getahon and he finished less than a second behind Crippa in 28:09.48, with Fifa taking bronze in 28:12.62.
Despite the conditions, Italy&rsquo;s Eyob Ghebrehiwet Faniel set a lifetime best of 28:19.01 in fifth place but with Crippa&rsquo;s older brother Nekagenet, a sub-28 man himself, dropping out just after halfway, it wasn&rsquo;t enough to stop Israel winning its first-ever European 10,000m Cup team gold.
<h2>Reh upgrades silver to gold</h2>
The women&rsquo;s race saw a dominant display from Germany&rsquo;s Alina Reh, who powered her way around the Stade Chasseboeuf to go one better than last year and take gold in 32:15.47.
There was a small question mark over her form going into the race after a fifth-place finish in the German 10,000m Championships last month, but she answered any questions with a fine solo effort.
Reh tracked Ukraine&rsquo;s Valeriia Zinenko &ndash; fourth 12 months ago in Pac&eacute; &ndash; in the early stages, with the pair quickly opening up a gap on the rest of the field. However, it didn't take long for Reh to take off just before the 3000m mark, reaching the halfway point in 15:49.40.
Zinenko, who finished one place ahead of Reh in Munich last year, was also on her own for the vast majority of the race with a large chasing pack following behind.

And it was to remain that way to the finish, with Reh becoming only the second-ever German to win this title after Sabrina Mockenhaupt in 2005, and Zinenko holding off the chasing pack to take silver in 32:29:81.
With her teammate and German champion Domenika Mayer taking bronze with 32:35:95, Germany was able to defend its women&rsquo;s team title from last year.
On a blustery day, 11 women broke the 33-minute mark, with Turkiye&rsquo;s Yayla G&ouml;nen knocking 10 seconds off her lifetime best - which she set at this same event 12 months ago - to finish sixth in 32:43:29.

How to follow the 2023 European 10,000m Cup

Reigning European 10,000m champion Yemaneberhan Crippa will be looking to make a statement at the European 10,000m Cup in Pac&eacute;, France on Saturday (3).
The 26-year-old Italian has been preparing specifically for the Cup in the Italian Alps since he finished fifth in the Milano Marathon on 2 April, his debut at the classic distance.
His time in Milan of 2:08:57 was a solid result, if not spectacular, for the Italian 10,000m record-holder with 27:10.56, clocked at the 2019 World Athletics Championships. He was bidding to break the Italian marathon record but fell more than a minute short of his target in Milan however, with apparently no ill-effects from his efforts, Crippa is feeling optimistic he can regain the men&rsquo;s Cup crown he placed upon his head in 2019.
Such has been Crippa&rsquo;s focus on the Cup, that he has only broken his training to contest a 10km race on the roads of Monza two weeks ago when he set a personal best of 28:02.
&ldquo;It was a good race. I started well although in the last two kilometres I lost a bit of pace. I also tried to push in the final stretch but the path [to the finish line] was slightly uphill and I felt a little tired. But it was definitely a good test and the &lsquo;road&rsquo; to the European 10,000m Cup is going well. I'm happy and I&rsquo;ll go back to altitude and continue my preparation,&rdquo; reflected Crippa shortly after his Monza victory.
Crippa will start as favourite in Pac&eacute; on the basis of both his gold medal in Munich last summer and the fact that he holds the fastest lifetime best of the 58 men's entrants &ndash; and he is the only man in Pac&eacute; to have run faster than the Cup record of 27:14.44 set by Spain&rsquo;s Fabian Roncero back in 1999 &ndash; but the race for victory could still be very competitive.
Another leading name possibly to enter medal consideration is Germany&rsquo;s Nils Voigt, who clocked a big personal best of 27:30.01 in March partly, he believes, as a result of changing his high-altitude training environment from Kenya to Flagstaff, USA.
Voigt is one of four athletes on the Cup start lists to have broken the 28 minute-barrier in 2023. He also knows what Cup racing is about after having finished fourth in 2021 and eighth last year.
However, the German failed to finish in a high-quality 10,000m race in London two weeks ago, which was his initial target, so there has to be question marks about his current form coming into Pac&eacute;.
In the team contest, France have taken the men&rsquo;s title for the last two years but the Italian team &ndash; which also contains Iliass Aouani who set a national record of 2:07.16 in the Barcelona Marathon in March, and Crippa&rsquo;s older brother Nekagenet &ndash; look on paper very strong as do Spain despite the late withdrawal on the eve of the Cup by Carlos Mayo who was third and second at the last two editions..

<h2>After team gold in 2022, can Reh win individual gold in 2023?</h2>
The women&rsquo;s Cup races see the return of Germany&rsquo;s Alina Reh to the fray.
Reh finished as the silver medallist last year and led Germany to their first-ever women&rsquo;s Cup team title. This year, she will be aiming to go one better and become just the second German individual women&rsquo;s winner after Sabrina Mockenhaupt in 2005.
Reh&rsquo;s best time of 31:19.87 over 25 laps of the track dates from 2019 and also makes her the fastest women in the Cup by almost half-a-minute. However, although she had some excellent early season performances on the roads, including a 1:08:62 personal best half marathon in Seville in January, she could only finish a disappointing fifth in the German 10,000m championships last month won by Domenika Mayer in 32:14.34.

If the Germans fall short of their best form it could provide an opportunity for the Spanish pair of Isabel Barreiro and Cristina Ruiz to shine and add to the country&rsquo;s historic tally of 24 gold medals, which makes them the most successful country in the 26-year history of the European 10,000m Cup.
Barreiro, who just missed out on a continental medal when finishing fourth in the 2021 European U23 5000m, impressed when winning Trofeo Iberico &ndash; the annual 10,000m match between Spain and Portugal &ndash; in March in a personal best of 32:03.37 while Ruiz was not far behind in third in 32:08.70, also a personal best, and they travel to Pac&eacute; as the fastest two women on 2023 form.
With three to score, the women&rsquo;s team title might well be fought between defending champions Germany and Spain, the latter last winning a decade ago in 2013.
However, Great Britain, led by Abbie Donnelly who set a personal best of 32:10.16 in London two weeks ago and who have won the women&rsquo;s team title five times in the last seven years, could also be a factor.

European champion Crippa headlines European 10,000m Cup entry-list

Two-time European cross country bronze medallist Alina Reh is among the standout names on Germany&rsquo;s team for the European 10,000m Cup in Pac&eacute; on 3 June.
Reh finished second individually in last year&rsquo;s European 10,000m Cup which took place in Pac&eacute; and also led Germany to their first ever team title in the women&rsquo;s race.&nbsp;
The team also features Domenika Mayer and Eva Dieterich who were also part of Germany&rsquo;s title-winning team last year. More recently, they finished first and second respectively at the German 10,000m Championships with lifetime bests of 32:14.34&nbsp; and 32:17.75.&nbsp;

Reh headlines Germany’s team for the European 10,000m Cup 

A winner of four European cross country titles, Nadia Battocletti made a winning debut in the 10,000m at the Italian 10,000m Championships in Brescia on Sunday (7) on a busy weekend of domestic 10,000m championship competition.
Battocletti, who finished seventh in the 5000m final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, covered the last kilometre in a swift 3:07.86 en route to yet another domestic title in 33:06.25. Across all surfaces and age-groups, Battocletti has now amassed 31 Italian titles.&nbsp;
The 23-year-old pulled clear in the last 700 metres from Anna Arnaudo - who has accompanied Battocletti on many victorious Italian teams at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships - who was second in 33:16.95

In the men&rsquo;s race, European fifth-placer Pietro Riva won the national title in 28:21.88 by almost 100 metres from Pasquale Selvarolo in 28:36.77.
Riva also finished fifth at the European 10,000m Cup in Pac&eacute; last year and the Italian team for this year&rsquo;s competition on 3 June will be emboldened by the likely inclusion of European champion Yemaneberhan Crippa who will refocus on the track after making his marathon debut this spring.
<h2>Mayer and Voigt claim the German 10,000m titles in Mittweida</h2>
At the German 10,000m Championships in Mittweida on Saturday (6) evening, Domenika Mayer caused something of an upset with victory in the women&rsquo;s race.
With European indoor 3000m champion Hanna Klein dropping out on her debut and European cross country champion Alina Reh fading to fifth in 33:21.43, Mayer won her first German title on the track in a lifetime best of 32:14.34.&nbsp;
"It was fun, even if I don't really like putting on the spikes. There were spectators everywhere and cheered us on. That pushed me. In my head I was completely free. Then I accelerated on the last lap and it was enough,&rdquo; said Mayer.
Mayer is arguably one of Europe&rsquo;s most versatile distance runners. She was part of Germany&rsquo;s gold medal-winning team in the marathon at the 2022 European Athletics Championships and she has recently been named on the German team for next month&rsquo;s World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Austria.

In the men&rsquo;s race, Nils Voigt won his second German 10,000m title in 28:03.15 ahead of Filimon Abraham in 28:12.79.
"With good acceleration, I've become German champion. In two weeks I'll run the 10,000 meters in London [the Night of the 10,000m PBs] again to collect more points for the world ranking,&rdquo; said Voigt.
At the Turkish 10,000m Championships in Mersin on Saturday (6), Ramazan Ozdemir won the men&rsquo;s race in 28:28.48 ahead of Sezgin Atac in 28:33.85. In the women&rsquo;s race, Fatma Karasu took the victory in 32:51.86 over Bahar Atalay in 32:52.74.

European 10,000m Cup

Pre-race favourite Jimmy Gressier powered away from his rivals in the second half to win the individual title at the European 10,000m Cup in Pace, France on Saturday (28) evening in 27:24.51 and lead France to a successful defence of the team title.&nbsp;
Gressier still had Spain&rsquo;s Carlos Mayo and Aras Kaya from Türkiye - the latter who finished ahead of Gressier at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships last December - in his slipstream at the halfway point in 13:42.56 but the charismatic and popular Frenchman put almost half-a-minute on his rivals in the last 5000 metres.
With only the lapped runners for company in the closing kilometres, Gressier ran hard in pursuit of the French record which stands at 27:17.29 and even though he fell narrowly short of this mark, the 25-year-old still made a richly successful return to this discipline.

In only his second track 10,000m some three years after winning the European U23 title in Gavle, Gressier slashed more than one minute off his lifetime best with 27:24.51 to ensure yet more continental honours. His time was also not only a qualifying time for the European Athletics Championships in Munich but also the World Athletics Championships in Oregon in mid-July.
Third last year, Mayo improved to second this year, finishing a distant second to Gressier in 27:53.12 with Kaya another five seconds back in third in 27:58.08.&nbsp;
With Yann Schrub the second counter for the home contingent in fourth in 27:59.32 and Emmanuel Roudolff clocking 28:06.28 in eleventh, France successfully defended their team title in Pac&eacute; despite the absence of last year&rsquo;s individual winner Morhad Amdouni due to injury.

In the women&rsquo;s race, Türkiye&rsquo;s multiple European champion Yasemin Can looked back to her best form after an off-colour 2021 season, putting down the hammer with a sizzling fourth kilometre of 3:02.74 to cut loose from a tightly bunched field.&nbsp;
Can&rsquo;s mid-race surge had the desired effect and the 25-year-old never looked in any danger of relinquishing her lead once she hit the front in earnest. She came home for victory on her European 10,000m Cup debut in a European leading time of 31:20.18 to also seal the qualifying times for both Munich and Eugene.

On the comeback trail from injury and illness, Alina Reh finished an isolated second in 31:39.86 with her teammate Katharina Steinruck third in a lifetime best of 32:03.88 to ensure Germany would win their first ever team title at the European 10,000m Cup in either competition.
There were some other notable lifetime bests for some of the athletes who just missed out on the individual medals.&nbsp;
Ukraine&rsquo;s Valeriia Zinenko was an excellent fourth in 32:07.28, one place ahead of 39-year-old Maitane Melero from Spain who ran her fastest ever time of 32:08.57. In sixth, Moira Stewartova set a Czech record of 32:08.96 and Mekdes Woldu was eighth on home soil for France in 32:11.72.

Gressier and Can dominate proceedings at the European 10,000m Cup

A thrilling late charge by European 5000m silver medallist Eilish McColgan propelled the British athlete to snatch a stunning victory at the European 10,000m Cup in Birmingham on Saturday (5).&nbsp;&nbsp;
Courtesy of a last lap of 64.23, McColgan hauled in long-time leader Selamawit Teferi just before the finish line after 25 laps of hard racing, despite the Israeli appearing to have an unassailable 15-second advantage with one kilometre to go.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Even with 600 metres to go, Teferi&rsquo;s lead spanned across nearly all of the back straight, but McColgan, pushed by an injection of pace from compatriot Jessica Judd who was chasing the Olympic qualifying standard of 31:25, sprinted for home to clock 31:19.35. With European 3000m indoor bronze medallist Verity Ockenden in fourth in 31:34.70, Britain comfortably took the team gold medal that they have now won on five of the last six occasions.&nbsp;
There was an outpour of emotion as the top three athletes all sealed their places for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Israeli 10,000m champion Teferi and Judd went under the 31:25:00 standard for the first time with 31:19:50 and 31:20:96 respectively.&nbsp;
The win was also especially sweet for McColgan, as she narrowly missed out the European title after a close battle with another Israeli rival, Lonah Chemtai Salpeter, at the last edition of the event in 2019.&nbsp; "I'm honestly absolutely buzzing," she said. &ldquo;To make that team, and to win the race as well, I couldn't have asked for anymore.&nbsp;
&ldquo;I started in the steeplechase, moved to the 5K, and now I think I&rsquo;ve found an event that I really love,&rdquo; added the Scottish runner, who will go to a third Olympics in the same city where her mother Liz won world 10,000m gold 30 years ago.&nbsp;&nbsp;

European indoor 3000m champion Amy-Eloise Markovc had been following her teammates closely but couldn&rsquo;t stay with the pace and slipped back to fifth towards the end in 32:04.38, while Albania&rsquo;s 2016 European steeplechase silver medallist Luiza Gega held her form well to finish with a lifetime best and national record of 32:16.25, albeit nearly a minute back from the leaders. &nbsp;
Italy&rsquo;s team silver came thanks to fifteenth-placed Giovanna Epis finishing as their fastest athlete with 33:02:23, but was aided by an excellent showing in the Women&rsquo;s B race, which saw two Italians finish in the top four behind Czech winner Teresa Hrochova. This was in spite of Italian champion Martina Merlo dropping out mid-race.&nbsp;
Anna Arnaudo and Rebecca Lonedo ran the show at the front for long spells, with Hrochova and Angelika Mach of Poland looking dangerous behind as they came through the 7000m split with 23:19.86 on the clock.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Arnaudo, 20, performed bravely - but appeared somewhat reluctant to be the one controlling the pace as it increased to 3:15 for the penultimate kilometre, now with only Hrochova for company.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The athlete who made her 10,000m track debut by running 33:53.78 at the Czech Championships in April, had asked for 33:30 pace going into the race and seemed determined to follow up the form that saw her run an Olympic qualifying time of 2:29:06 on her marathon debut in Austria two weeks ago.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Powering into first position on the back straight, Hrochova unleashed a brilliant kick as part of a 68-second last lap that gave the young Italian Arnaudo little chance to respond. She came home 2.7 seconds behind the winner&rsquo;s 33:00.00 exact clocking.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
Mach&rsquo;s third place helped Poland take bronze in the team standings, with their fastest time coming from Izabela Paszkiewicz, who was eleventh in the A Race.&nbsp;

Late drama seals European 10,000m Cup win for McColgan

In a repeat of the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships, France&rsquo;s Morhad Amdouni found another gear on the last lap to outsprint Bashir Abdi from Belgium for the individual title and lead France to the team trophy at the European 10,000m Cup in Birmingham on Saturday (5) evening.
The top three finishers all secured the Olympic qualifying standard of 27:28 but the anticipated domestic head-to-head between European leader Marc Scott and four-time Olympic champion Mo Farah didn&rsquo;t quite materialise at the University of Birmingham Athletics Track.
Both Scott and Farah fell away from the leaders after the halfway point, although Scott did rally in the latter stages to pip his more illustrious compatriot for the domestic stakes in seventh in 27:49.94 to Farah&rsquo;s 27:50.64 in eighth, his first defeat at this distance since the 2011 World Athletics Championships.&nbsp;
Scott already has the Olympic qualifying standard by virtue of an early season European leading time of 27:10.41 and is now assured of his place on the British team for Tokyo although Farah, who has been waylaid by a recent ankle injury, will have to attempt the distance again in order to defend his 10,000m title in the Japanese capital.
&ldquo;The last 10 days hasn&rsquo;t been great but, no matter what I&rsquo;ve achieved in my career, it was important that I come to the trials. It would have been easy not to show but I did show and I dug in deep. With 15 laps to go I was hurting hard. I just had to keep fighting, keep digging in and finish in the top two,&rdquo; said Farah after the race.
At the front end of the race, Amdouni showed the most enterprise and resolutely stuck to the wavelights - an initiative which was used for the first time at the 2019 European 10,000m Cup in London - which were set at just a fraction inside the Olympic 10,000m qualifying time of 27:28.
The European 10,000m champion was working visibly hard in chase of the standard and the grimacing Frenchman was closed down in the latter stages by a tandem of Abdi and Carlos Mayo from Spain who formed a group of three with Amdouni with one kilometre remaining.
Having relinquished the lead, Amdouni dug in at the back of the leading trio as Mayo forged ahead in pursuit of victory as well as the Olympic qualifying standard with Abdi in his slipstream. This is how the positions remained as they hit the bell.

Two laps after looking in danger of being dropped, a revived Amdouni found extra resolve and moved wide with 200 metres remaining and uncorked a devastating sprint finish. The European 10,000m champion passed Mayo first before overhauling Abdi halfway down the home straight for victory in a lifetime best of 27:23.39.
Abdi and Mayo also secured lifetime bests and Olympic qualifying times of 27:24.41 and 27:25.00 respectively although the Belgian is expected to focus on the marathon at the Tokyo Olympics. Abdi is the second fastest European in history at the distance by virtue of a 2:04:49 performance in the 2020 Tokyo Marathon.
With Yann Schrub (27:49.64) and Mehdi Frere (28:03.90) fifth and eleventh respectively, France sealed their first team title in the men&rsquo;s race since 2010 when the event was held at home in Marseille. Hosts Great Britain, whose third counter Emile Cairess was rewarded with a lifetime best of 27:53.19 in tenth, won silver in the team stakes with bronze heading in the direction of Spain.
